Claudia Saunders' Plate of Fried Deliciousness

Claudia Saunders' Plate of Fried Deliciousness

I Ate Fried Chicken at Colonel Saunders' House

September 23, 2014

In my mind, there are two types of dreams.  The first is the kind that you cultivate for months, years, and even an entire lifetime.  The second, however, is the kind that originates from less aspiring (and perhaps idiotic) means.  The latter of which is how this dream started.  From the moment my client uttered the words "Colonel Saunders has a fried chicken restaurant at his house not too fair from here", I dedicated my inner being to pursuing the dream of delicious fried chicken in my belly.

In all seriousness, I love Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC, for you hipsters) and I love kitsch.  I love it so much that one of my favorite meals traveling abroad in Europe was eating at a Barcelona  across from the Sagrada Família.  Eating there required two things:  a car and the patience to drive 45 minutes on a country road to get there.  Fortunately, working the weekend in Kentucky allowed both items fulfilled.  Thus after driving by horse farm after horse farm, I arrived greeted by the large "Claudia Saunders' Dinner House" sign as the sun was setting.

Now, you would think I'd be the only idiot lugging around a camera taking pictures around the plantation-style restaurant.  Surprisingly, there were 3 other people taking photos in the parking lot.  Did I still feel like an idiot nonetheless using a DSLR to document my entire meal?  Oh, absolutely.  Fortunately enough, I had a kind waiter Sam who didn't judge me in the least (thanks Sam!).

While the Southern food options were plentiful, I chose to go with the classic Chicken dinner for $10.99.  The result was mounds of buttery deliciousness, starting from the chicken and dumplings soup and salad to mashed potatoes, green beans and fried chicken.  To be frank, I've had better all of the above individually.  However with everything together with the price of $10.99 for all that food made the drive worth it.

Now, I sit here days later feeling slightly guilty and cranky from being carb-free.  Despite being a massive tourist trap, I saw it
